Biggest celebrity scandals of 2015

CONTROVERSIES and scandals have been plenty in the Kenyan entertainment scene this year. We sample some of them that left many tongues wagging.
DJ Creme's sex tape
One of the best deejays in Kenya gifted us the ultimate scandal of the year. If there was a medal, trophy or bonus to be dished out, it will probably go to George Njuguna aka DJ Creme De La Creme. It was early November when a sex tape starring the famous DJ and a woman later identified as Halima Nasir surfaced online. The video went viral within a few minutes with the news hitting the headlines even in some of the world's top gossip sites, tabloids and newspapers.

Susumila versus ex-wife
In late October, Mombasa-based artiste Susumila was accused by his ex-wife, Ruth Jimmy, of bewitching her. The mother of two alleged that the Hidaya hit maker used witchcraft to divorce her and to seduce his then new catch, Kibibi Salim. Just a few days after their rant, Susumila wedded the actress at Paris Hall in Mombasa.

Willy Paul abortion claims
Gospel artiste Willy Paul has been making controversial headlines for a very long time now. In September, a 19-year-old woman named Charlene Leila, who claimed to be his girlfriend, sensationally accused the singer of impregnating her and later ordering her to abort. However, Willy rubbished the claims, saying it was a fabrication by his enemies to tarnish his image and stall his progress.

Prezzo slapped in club
On the night of December 4, controversial and flashy rapper Prezzo experienced the wrath of an angry reveller. Apparently, the Liq Her hitmaker, accompanied by his entourage, walked over to a table where a couple was hanging out. He then allegedly pulled moves on the lady, who was waiting for her male companion who was at the restrooms. Upon his return to the table, he was irked by Prezzo who was busy throwing his punchlines to the lady. The dude got angry and slapped Prezzo across his face before his entourage stepped in to shield him from being hit again, a commotion that saw the club security intervene.

Sara Nanaa busts cheating fiancé
Singer and events manager Sara Nanaa was all set to tie the knot with her fiance. This was not to be as she discovered a few minutes to taking her marriage vows that her man had cheated with one of her close friends at a bachelors' party.
Adebayor's witchcraft claims
Emmanuel Adebayor is one of Africa's greatest football stars. However, the Togolese made headlines in May when he accused his mother of bewitching him, thus stalling his footballing career. The former Arsenal striker also alleged his mum, brothers and sisters had “extorted” huge amounts of money from him.
Delvin's tiff with Ne-Yo
When American R&B star, Ne-Yo came to Kenya in August, courtesy of Coke Studio Africa, he took some time out to sample Nairobi's nightlife. He was having a meet-and-greet party at the new F1 Club when allegedly Delvin, a member of the boy group Sauti Sol, walked in with his girlfriend and headed to the VIP section. This irked one of Ne-Yo's bouncers who ordered Delvin and his flame ejected. However, Delvin later denied that he was thrown out of the club or man-handled by Ne-Yo's bouncers.

 Ann Mbaru's nudes and sex tape
Ann Mbaru is a former Kenyan contestant at the Big Brother Africa reality show. In November, her alleged sex tape was uploaded on an international porn site, xhamster. Her nude photos also leaked in Uganda and went viral.
Ambassada arrested over stolen iPad
Popular Kenya-based Ugandan gospel singer Ambassada was in February arrested for handling stolen property. Apparently he had bought the gadget not knowing that it had been stolen from comedian Fred Omondi. However, he was a relieved man when the charges were dropped in October.
Octopizzo busted by American R&B star
August Alsina, a popular US R&B star, busted Kenyan rapper Octopizzo who had claimed that he had recorded a song titled This Could Be Us with him. Alsina took to Twitter to unmask Octopizzo by labeling him a liar. Octopizzo denied the accusations, saying the two had worked on the single online.

IK Speaks about Big Brother

Nigerian IK has become synonymous with Big Brother Africa, presenting the live shows to DStv’s African audiences. Recently Quick Talk sat with him during the MultiChoice Africa Content Showcase extravaganza in Mauritius, and yes, dis broda is just as hot off the screen…

What does your name mean? I just can’t pronounce it, I’m sorry.

My full name is Ikponmwosa Osakioduwa [he spells it out]. The first name means ‘I thank God’ and Osakioduwa means ‘God opens a door to prosperity’.

Wow. Was that really given by your parents?

My first name is from my parents; my surname wasn’t my original surname. My original surname was Oviawe, but it has some – in my opinion – ungodly implications.

What does Oviawe mean?

It is a pledge of allegiance to a goddess deity and I am a Christian and thought it would be awkward. So, I changed it…

…To a mouthful! Does your wife carry your name?

[Laughing:] Just my last name. I knew it would be a mouthful but it has some character.

I am surprised you are that deeply Christian. You come across as the ultimate party animal.

I was a party animal. I kind of still am a party animal, but because of my Christian background, I like to party within decent parameters.

What decent parameters, now?

Have fun, hurt nobody. You can party, but if it is going to cause any kind of harm to family, friends… You want to party but stay on the right side of God. Dancing is not a sin, but when you turn the dance floor into a ‘fast food joint’ where you take people away, then there’s a problem [that would be fun; a double IK, with some Nnaji topping, please...]

You are a great dancer [Yes, the brother can move.] I watched you at the Viacom activation [Viacom is the media network supplying DStv channels including BET, MTV and Nickelodeon], and maaaan….! How old are you?

[Laughing:] I was born on May 21, 1979. I’m 36. My dad [Brigadier General Samuel Oviawe] is a fun guy; he is a party person. He was the first person to take me to a nightclub. I was 15 years old and he said, ‘listen, there’s not that much here; don’t get pressured into clubbing’.

Some forward-looking dad! Is he still alive?

Yes, he is alive. My mum passed away in 2012 [IK, whose countenance clouds over at this point, lost his mother, Felicia Oviawe, to cancer just three days after his birthday.] I was in the middle of Big Brother. It was one of the hardest times of my life. Everyone was worried whether I would be able to cope with the show, but I survived.

I’m sorry. And you did well.

You and Big Brother are quite popular in Uganda…

That’s nice. I like Uganda. I feel at home there. The people are very welcoming, I’m glad to know they like me. Big Brother has been a pleasurable ride for me. It has been quite an educational ride. It is the biggest show I have ever presented.

I remember coming out there the first time and realising I wasn’t prepared for the live element of the show. I couldn’t hear properly; they block off one of your ears so the director can speak to you any time and in the second ear you are almost drowned out by the screaming crowd. So many cameramen, so many soundmen…it was quite a learning curve.

Do you have a favourite housemate?

No, I have never had a season where I had a candidate I was rooting for. I am not allowed to speak to any of them before I meet them on stage. A few days to the show, they sit me down and take me through the entire process of how they selected these people.

They’ll show me audition tapes of even people who did not make it. They give me background history and data, psychoanalysis on each person…I also google and do a lot of homework on each housemate. By the time you meet them you feel like you are friends with them.

Surely some have grown on you?

After the seasons you find that some people gravitate towards you more than others.

Like…?

Feza [from Tanzania]. Feza is a very good friend of mine; if ever she is in my country she knows I’ll take care of her. Then there is Gaetano Kagwa [Uganda’s first BBA representative, now at Capital FM].

I didn’t host his season, but somehow we became very good friends through Studio 53 [Gaetano hosted the Mnet show, with IK as a field presenter.] I’m very close to him. He is one of my role models in the business. He used to train me. Gaetano is awesome; people really don’t know how technically sound he is.

Gaetano will love reading that! I’m surprised you don’t have the Nigerian accent. Were you educated in Nigeria?

Yes… I lived abroad for a few years, but I don’t like to reference it.

Very few African presenters are successfully humorous in English, because we think in our local dialects, but you do that effortlessly…

Thank you very much, I appreciate that.

So, where did you go to school?

I schooled in Nigeria mostly. I was abroad for three, four years, but I don’t reference it. Nigeria has about 175 ethnic groups and a bunch of languages as well, but my education was in different parts of the country, because my dad was in the army; so, we didn’t stay in one place long enough to learn a Nigerian language.

And we were in international schools; so, unfortunately I never got to learn any of the Nigerian languages. I still want to find a teacher, though…

So, your kids…

…My kids are completely English. They don’t speak any Nigerian languages [IK has a six-year-old and a three-year-old].

Your wife [Olo] must be a very patient woman! [IK is quite the ladies’ man. He calls random women ‘honey’, ‘sweetheart’, ‘babe’ and is generous with the bear hugs too…]

She is a very patient woman, honestly. She is a very understanding woman, because I am a bit of a flirt and in talking you say a lot of foolish things and attract a lot of unnecessary attention.

At the opening ceremony [in Mauritius], you asked Banky W what he would choose between onion eye drops and sandpaper toilet paper…answer that yourself.

Onion eye drops certainly! I would rather cry than walk around sore for the rest of the week.

And given a choice to bare your thoughts or bare your nudity?

I would share my thoughts, I think. [Seriously? Quick Talk tells him her thoughts are dangerous and would sooner share her nudity.] The thing is, with nudity, it would be awkward with kids and all, but with thoughts I know other people think the same thoughts like me. We all think the same rubbish…

If you were to go to a Desert Island, what’s the one thing you would take?

My wife [they’ve been married seven years].

ThrowbackThursday BBA winner Dillish Matthews @18

Dillish Matthews was the Big Brother Africa the Chase winner in 2013 she shared a throwback picture of herself this week.

This throwback picture goes back a few years ago to when she was in 18 years old. "Me at 18, I still love wearing heart shaped necklaces" wrote Dillish in the caption of the picture.

The former BBA winner was in Pulse yesterday (August 26) for an exclusive interview. In the interview she spoke on a range of topics from Nigerian food, Nigerian men, BBA and her relationship with Flavour.

During the interview, she disclosed that she did not spend her prize money, but rather she invested in real estate. Earlier in the year it was reported that she had spent all of her prize money, but during the interview she denied this.

BBAChase Winner Dillish Mathews Centre for Inspiration

BBA 'The Chase' winner Namibia's Dillish Mathews is one of those ex-BBA contestants that have stayed in the limelight basically for the right reasons.

Ever since she bagged the $200.000k from Big Brother two years ago, Dillish has gone on to show Africa and the whole world that that was just the beginning after she's been able to get involved in so many other business ventures and projects.

Apart from being a a rich young lady, she's also been an inspiration to the youth though her entrepreneurial skills setting up/enlarging her saloon business, coming up with her own make-up accessories especially for the ladies and all.

The globe trotting "Princess" (as she refers to herself) has also featured in one Nigeria's top artiste Mr.Flavor's music video.

When is Big Brother Africa Starting?

Multichoice Africa has been mum on this year’s edition of Big Brother Africa (BBA) amid uncertainty that the television reality show would take place.

BBA auditions traditionally take place around March with the three-month journey beginning end of May or early June.

Last year’s BBA was moved to September due to the Fifa World Cup held in Brazil during the months of June and July, which was also being beamed on DStv.

But as of this year’s edition, up to this day there has not been a word.

When contacted for comment, Liz Dziva, Multichoice Zimbabwe’s Public Relations and Publicity manager said there was no news as yet.

“I have been asked to wait a little bit for news regarding Big Brother. I will keep in touch,” she said.

Inquiries on Big Brother are answered by the Multichoice South Africa office.

Problems seemed to have started when the original house burned down last year in September, a week before the set date.

The date had already been moved to pave way for the World Cup as they were screening all matches live.

They had a new house which hosted BBA (2014) and Big Brother Mzansi (2015).

In May, during Big Brother Mzansi which is a South African version, a neighbour reportedly had enough of the noise from the house and sprayed water from a hose-pipe over the cast and crew.

POWER FM Representing: Dj Creejay Spins Big Brother House

POWER 99.7 FM Deejay Creejay whose real names are Zebron Tembo could not miss a simple point or slide off his fingers from last Friday's party music theme which was strictly African!

How sweet it was and it was as the simply the youthful deejay burned the decks with that obvious advantageous bias towards Zambian music to a clear satisfaction of the housemates.

Many might say that the Zambian music has not been well sold out across Africa; which is arguably a fact, but the superseding reality remains that though less revealed the Zambian music is loved!

This was evident by the number of housemates who sang along Zambian jams as Deejay Creejay confesses: "I did not expect to see so many housemates from other countries singing along the Zambian music and enjoying it to the fullest."

Deejay Creejay who enjoyed his one hour on the decks goes on to say: "it is unfortunate that our artists are doing less in taking their music to the international platform. The truth is that the music is very much salable and loved,"

He gives an example of Macky 2's You are so Beautiful Track which he says has a beautiful video that that can make it on the top chats of African Videos of Channel O.

He says the music videos being produced in Zambia nowadays are of international standards and urges artists to avail them to the evergreen Channel O.

Earlier that evening Mack 2 had an idea that a Zambian Deejay was coming into the house but wasn't sure what package the young man was bringing to the house until the Kopala tunes seized the airwaves.

The music was good enough that even the party time seemed so short that housemates thought Big Brother ended the party earlier than that the stipulated time.

Come on, the one hour had passed only that the young man knew exactly where to place his fingers!

Big Brother Africa 2014: Gone but not forgotten!

 They came, they saw, they conquered and stayed on our minds courtesy of their unique and interesting personalities, that’s the least we can describe our 12 ‘fallen’ Hotshots. Big Brother is an interesting show so to say, unfortunately when one gets ‘addicted’, they are hurt to the core as soon as their favorites walk the exit door even though it’s well known that at some point housemates will be evicted until just a few remain in the final week.

When it come to Big Brother Hotshots, the story doesn’t differ that much as the show saw 26 enthusiasts enter the house and after almost 6 weeks, 12 housemates have since been evicted leaving the house with only 14 as the finale edges closer. Today, we’d like to go down memory lane and remember the housemates that have since been booted out since week one.

Zambian Resa was the first to be shown the exit door after 7 days on the show, she was followed a few minutes later by Mozambican beauty Mira who’s famously remembered to have ‘stolen’ the heart of Namibian Luis who spent a bigger part of the show crying out to her and wanting out at some point.

The second week saw the first shocker of the season as three housemates were evicted, the fact that all the three were ladies simply added salt to the wound as the flowers seemed to be wilting. These were Nigeria’s twerker Lilian, Uganda’s Esther ‘small pepper’ and Kenyan comedienne Sabina

Esther Misses Flight to Uganda

Esther Akankwasa, Uganda’s former representative in this year’s edition of Big Brother Africa-Hotshots, failed to return to the country yesterday as expected.

 

While a reasonable number of journalists were patiently waiting to go receive her from the airport, it occurred she had missed her flight back and would be expected on the next day, which is today.

 

Reliable sources from the Multi-Choice Uganda office revealed that Akankwasa missed her intended flight back home after an unsuccessful spell on the reality TV show. 

 

“We are sorry to inform you that unfortunately, Esther missed her flight and won’t be jetting in today. We expect her tomorrow,’ said Tina Wamala, Multi-Choice Uganda’s Public Relations Officer.

 

The lively Akankwasa was evicted last Sunday evening, alongside Nigeria’s Lillian and Kenya’s Sabina after just two weeks in the house. That latest evictions mean there are only five girls left in the house so far.

 

Her eviction leaves Ugandans only hoping that Ella (Stella Nantumbwe), who is also the country’s only other representative in the house to stay in just longer and draw closer to the $300, 000 grand prize.

BBAHotshots: It Is Not Easy For Kenya To Win It

Do I sound like that proverbial prophet of doom? May be. May be not. But that is not what my intentions are. It is crystal clear that when it comes to the biggest reality show in continental Africa, the Big Brother Africa, Kenya and her East Africa neighbours are utterly disadvantaged.

That is the negative side of nations merging to form regions.
The voting process and how votes are counted puts us (Kenya and her neighbours) at a risk of losing the coveted award.
Already Kenya’s female representative Sabina has been kicked out of the contest after garnering the least amount of votes.

When evictions were done last Sunday, Sabina could have survived but because Uganda had a representative already evicted, Sabina had to bear the burden of facing the wrath of the panel. She had actually tied with another representative from Uganda.
That is how harsh the eviction exercise is.
But who is to blame?

Here is what happens. When you vote, your vote is counted as one. It is a country. So even if all the 40 million Kenyans cast their votes for the remaining contestant, Melvin Alusa, it will be counted as a single vote.

This explains why there are only 14 votes because the number of countries being represented in the show is 13 and those not represented are counted as Rest of Africa, and have one vote.
Early on I talked of East Africa not winning this contest. You see it will be so ironical for a Kenyan to vote for a Ugandan or a Tanzanian representative and yet our own ALUSA is in the race.
Someone is already asking why CMB Prezzo managed to juggle his way to the finals of the contest. That is simple. There was no other East African contestant to rival him. Prezzo was lucky.

With East Africa still well represented in the reality show, the contestants are likely to garner a vote each from the three countries. This is absurd, right?
Unless votes come from other countries in support of our own, ALUSA is likely to be back any time from now.
So how do we entice other countries to vote for our Alusa? That is the biggest puzzle that we must unravel.
Alusa’s survival is not in our hands. It is in the hands of other African nations.

40 million votes from Kenya= 1 vote
90 million votes from Nigeria= 1 vote
30 million votes from Namibia= 1 vote
40 million votes from Tanzania= 1 vote
30 million votes from Uganda= 1 vote
Et al et al et al...
All we can do is wish Alusa all the best of luck. But that does not mean we do not vote. We must vote for our own Alusa.

Will Africa Save Tayo Tonight?

Barely two weeks into Big Brother Africa-Hotshots, the psychological interplay has begun. Allies and enemies have formed their cliques, each clawing and preying on the other’s weaknesses. The real game has begun. The dreadful eviction nights have arrived faster than time and the nominees wonder which one of them will have their perfect plan truncated.

The Zambian, Resa and Mozambique’s Sipe were the first to kiss the house goodbye. It’s awful to be the first to go, but that’s why it’s called a game. Tonight, Nigeria’s Tayo, Zimbabwe’s JJ and Rwanda’s Frankie are up for eviction.

Tayo seems to have started up on a bad note. He has largely been derided as immature and arrogant. The ladies especially feel that he talks down on them. However, he is yet to mellow as his aggressive nature gets worse every day. His housemates are somehow getting used to his daily tantrums. His loud comments nearly caused a fight between him and JJ during the week.
For JJ, his experience as the fake housemate in last year’s edition provokes annoyance from his housemates who see him as an ‘I-know-it-all’ person.


Frankie simply lacks the presence for his housemates.
Other housemates up for possible eviction include Esther, Laveda, Lilian
Sabina and Ella. Ella was added by new Head of Head, Samantha.
Cupid’s arrow has already struck at some housemates’ heart with Nhlanhla and Sheila showing it all. It is too early to guess if Goitse will allow Idris to take a hold of her heart as suggested by the romantic dinner they had.


One of the lessons that came out of one of the weekend task is your talents doesn’t necessarily guarantee the crown. The housemates were grouped in two for a task that will earn the winning team from the following week’s  nomination for eviction. Though Laveda’s team had a pack of talents, it was Sheila’s team who won the coveted immunity. Sadly, the first two housemates to leave the house belonged to the winning team, Waka Waka Mou. Other members of the team include Sheilla, Nhlanhla, Luis, Macky2, Trezagah, Mr. 265, Sipe, Idris, Ellah, Butterphly and M’am Bea.

Tonight will reveal if Samantha’s team will win immunity from next week’s nomination.
This week’s task had to do with choreography and again the housemates had to be split into two groups. To avoid angry voices and fiery hands, Big Brother did the division himself by asking the housemates to pick two different balls, red and blue. Alusa and Permithias led their group in choreography. Lillian had to learn that her twerking didn’t count for much.

The housemates won their 100 per cent wager as they emerged winners in their Modern Dance Battle Week presentation. It called for a night of baptism with champagne for the champions.

It is still not clear if Lillian is walking in former BBA housemate, Beverly Osu’s footsteps.
If Tayo should leave the house tonight, he will be compensated with the bundle of joy that was added to his family. Also, Nigeria’s fate of winning the cash prize of USD 300,000 will be in the hands of Lillian.

#BBhotshots: love and war

It a heated day in the Hotshots house, with the boys having a huge fallout while Idris pulled off his much anticipated date with Goitse.

A huge battle of the egos ensued with Tayo caught up in the middle. A couple of the guys were gathered in the room where JJ was rapping, when an infuriated Tayo showed up to express his disapproval of JJ's lyrical style:

With all the rucus, the other housemates came running and HoH Samantha tried to be the voice of reason, reminding the group that any physical violence would be grounds for immediate eviction.

In the name of love, Goidris finally went on their date. It was a romantic setting with red roses in the garden and Idris playing the perfect gentleman.

He had cooking help from Nhlanhla and JJ, while Sabina, Ellah, M'am Bea and Luis played waitrons. Alusa provided the musical element whilw Idris read his deeply felt poem:

At the end of the date it was still unclear whether Goitse saw Idris as more than just a friend.

There’s was also some tension surrounding the tasks, especially with Biggy announcing that each team had to create a backdrop for their performance.

The teams got down as they rehearsed their dance routines. Permithias was leading while one of the teams while in the other it was Arthur who was the foreman.

Later in the day the housemates were joined by Caitlin and Daniel Swanepoel from DS Productions to fine tune their dance routines.

This helped the housemates focus their energy on something new which alleviated some stress.

During the diary sessions, Samantha told Biggy that she was trying to establish an order in the house and minimise the usage of swear words.

She even tried to instil better health habits by hiding the salt which some housemates, like Sipe, thought it was a little over the top.

Meanwhile Permithias took a staggering blow as Biggy announces that he was also up for possible eviction on Sunday.

Our Recent Interview: Motamma talk Children’s Day

It's Children's Day again and given recent events, it is only right we celebrate the children. Ayo Falafala had the chance to chat with Big Brother Africa's Motamma and Last Flight to Abuja director, Obi Emenloye about the day. 

Ayo Falafala: What are your thoughts on children? 
Motamma: Children are the most wonderful and precious beings created by God.  

AF: What are your favourite memories as a child?
M: Playing, but I didn't have a great childhood though and would never want to be a child again.  

AF: Did your parents ever do something special for you on Children's day? 
M: I never knew there was Children's Day but the greatest thing I thank my parents for is granting me the right to education. It’s the best gift ever, timeless and irreplaceable.  

AF: What is your wish for African children? 
M: To be proud of their originality, language and where they are from. We live in an era where if one wears their natural hair It is awkward but when they wear foreign hair its cool. I'd love to see an African child stand up for their continent as well and strive for peace.

AF: Lastly, what is Motamma up to now? 
M: Working on releasing my single, it’s a dance number. As Africa knows, I'm gifted in dancing as well as being a happy character, that's why I do happy dance music. It’s just adding up to the many hats I wear and to have more variety and give more when meeting my fans

Big Brother Africa All Stars 2, who will represent your country?

Word on the grapevine is, this year's Big Brother Africa reality show will be featuring familiar faces. The ninth season of Africa's biggest reality show will select it's contestant from it's past housemate list.

This follows the fact that the call for contestants hasn't been made and usually by May, everyone is trying to guess who the representatives for their respective countries is.

Apparently, according to sources, as with previous editions of Big Brother Africa, the new season will have a twist. It will be an All Star season that will feature popular faces from 14 countries and it it set to kick off late August after the World Cup season ends.

Some of the housemates who may make the cut to represent Kenya this season include rapper Prezzo, socialite Huddah Monroe, politician Millicent Mugadi, TV producer Nic Wangondu and TV host Malonza.

Previous editions of Big Brother Africa have boasted huge cash prizes for winners and this year the winner will walk away with USD300 000.
