Fatima Nkata who was one of the housemates on the eighth season of the reality competition television series Big Brother Africa (BBA), in 2013 has rescued Malawi's 'Warm Heart of Africa' tag after she wrote to the Sawubona Editorial team for changing the celebrated title.
Sawubona , a flight magazine in South African Airways (SAA's) had published an edition which dubbed Malawi's neighbors' Zambia as the 'Warm Heart of Africa', a slogan which has been touted as Malawian since time in memorial.
It is said; the title insinuated that Malawi was lately substantially loosing the tag to Zambia.
But in an interview with Malawi24, Nkata said she had learnt with profound concern that Sawubona did not uphold the tag which she said was purely Malawian and was never rescinded.
Nkata, who was before representing the country at the BBA, a renowned Malawi Broadcasting Cooperation (MBC) Television personality disclosed that she emailed the editors on the basis that as a citizen, it was rightful to query the authorities on something which was wrong.
She said, she had seen the picture of the magazine on the social media and saw that some Zambians' felt it was right for their country to attain the slogan'.
"Most of the comments that people were posting on the picture were negatively insinuating that Zambia is stealing our national slogan and we will just being passive about it. "Said Nkata.
She added "Passive aggression is something that is becoming synonymous with our generation today. Very often when issues like these arise, we vehemently complain and voice our opinions in our little circles of influence on social media and other such platforms and it ends there. I was raised to believe that if something does not sit well with you, then it is up to you to do something about it. Complaining to no one in particular does not change the situation. "
According to Nkata who Malawi24 understands that she received duly apology from the Sawubona Management who said the scripts were never intentional ,said that Malawians have overtime remained peaceful and do not in any way have to be deduced from the slogan.
"Malawi's greatest assets are her people. People of a warm, peaceful and generally happy disposition.
The pressures of modern day life in a developing nation however is taking a toll on us and we are moving further and further away from that disposition ."
She further called on Malawians to always maintain the tag which has among other things led to the country's growth in the tourism sector.
"Yes the world is changing, our needs, challenges and struggles are changing. We must adapt but meet our needs, face our challenges and struggles without losing priceless elements of who we are.".
Malawi has been fondly known as 'Warm Heart of Africa' due to the calmness, peace and harmony the people have been into.
During the 50 Years of Independence celebration this year, one of the things the countries boasted of was the sustained peace that has always been there.
